Right now, I'm reading Dracula, by Bram Stoker of course.
I've meant to read this book for years, and have always gotten maybe 4 or 5 chapters in and quit. Part of this was due to my desire to read and finish the book in the month of October - since that's the spooky Halloween month for a spooky Halloweeny book like Dracula. But I never accomplished this, and so would drop it if I didn't finish.
This year, I started it again around Octoberish - except I kept reading this time! I wish I could have finished it by now but I've been way busy with work, school, and family. But I'm half-way through, so I'm making progress!
It's a good book. Kind of funny in some ways....the sensibilities are so thoroughly Victorian - in some ways representing a kind of naive sexism, yet at the same time, representing a forward thinking (at the time) idea of feminism/female empowerment (especially in the character of Mina)....anyway, really interesting book!
Plus, I love how it describes Dracula and his powers as a vampire. It's almost as if he's all-powerful - and all-powerful, evil characters are always the most frightening to me, the kind that seem practically invincible...yet there are just enough chinks in his superhuman invincibility to make him combatable by the far weaker living mortals.... but imagining being up against someone as powerful and cunning as Dracula is really kind of a terrifying thought!
