Are you in favor of raising the minimum wage? Ive heard arguments that if you raise the wage then people wont train into skilled positions. On facebook I see people who are in those type of positions complaining that fast food workers dont deserve a higher wage. I guess as one of the unskilled I would want a wage increase. Im not in a position to be educated due to my illness (Ive tried and failed) but that doesnt mean others arent able to. I think that reducing the cost of school and raising the wage a tad would help offset the student loan debt, making it easier for students to work part time and attend college.

I do support a minimum wage increase along with a reduction in the cost of college. Problem is, with a minimum wage increase the cost of living also raises. Now for someone like me would probably not gain more money due to the wage increase, but would be affected by the cost of living increase. So as nice as it sounds, it comes with consequence.

Lol well, if you get your own successful business........
I like working, keeps me active! And it feels good to have a job even when broke lol ok paying a debt off is screwing things up for me now, but at least the debt will be paid. However, its putting my place of living at risk. The past few months have been incredibly difficult financially. Still have another month to go before its finished. But my worry of losing my apartment is high. Sure I've got it figured out, but there's a what if for june hanging on my head. And I can't just afford to move because you know that costs money that I don't have. *shrugs* day by day

The high cost of living here means if you're on minimum wage (which is around $17 US): - you have to share living space because renting on your own would mean eating 3-minute noodles every night - you have to share transport - ie. carpool or borrow a bike! - sharing food costs Even after paying for all that you don't have much left over, so you can't spend on fancy things! (like Smashing Pumpkins stuff)

I make more than the minimum wage. And I can't afford my place and bills on my paychecks. Working overtime gives extra, but it's beyond exhausting.

I've seen places that can't afford to pay a higher minimum wage reduce their worker's hours, so a full time job went to part-time...which means either doing more work in less time or they have got volunteers to do the extra work. If businesses can't pay the wages they are more likely to get work done in China...or get private prisons to do the work. Obviously jobs like retail and trades where someone needs to be there to service a customer that won't happen - but any production will disappear overseas or into prisons. yikes

What sucks about raising the minimum wage is that the people already working will not get raises to compensate for the raises they already earned

And those who had to work from the bottom and earn raises don't get compensated until the few cents raise comes in. At least these folks get a better raise by this than what many companies would give them

My city just passed a law for minimum wage to be 15 dollars an hour. So that means I would need a pay raise for my particular job as management? Although, I could quit managing and have less stress with responsibilities and have decent pay and still keep my benefits. If course this is a gradual increase of minimum wage to happen over the next few years. Not to mention my company fought in court to not have to pay people the minimum wage increase of 10 dollars per hour so they pay 9.50 which is less than pretty much every business except I know the liquor store apparently pays only 9.50 and that's a small business. Its mind boggling

Watch the prices go up A gallon of milk is you going to cost nearly 7 bucks. This is not going to work out in favor of the people. Gas prices will probably go up too

I made up an equation of what a living wage should be according to the ideals of life, love and the pursuit of happiness.
First I broke it down to how much it would take to meet the basic needs of a single person. Food, Shelter, Health Insurance, Transportation.
I gave a very modest amount to the housing, an amount that is probably too low. Given the cost of these, with an additional 200 dollars a month to spend on personal interests (because I deserve to pursue that as an American) Thats about 27,000 a year. A job would have to pay 15 dollars an hour to cover those costs. This is not including things like laundry, cable, telephone, clothes, soap, personal hygiene items like toilet paper and what not, or dental care.
Considering that most of us live on a third of that wage is pretty eye opening to just how unjust this whole thing is.
A friend told me that if the wealth was equally distributed through all the country (or world, cant remember) that each household would be earning 700,000 dollars a year. THATS how screwed up this all is!
